Matt Mcgrath Prince Edward Island Obituary: PEI’s Wrestling Community Mourns Pro MMA Fighter
The Prince Island sports community is mourning the profound loss of Matt MacGrath, who passed away early this morning. Matt was one of the strongest and kindest people many had the privilege of knowing—a prideful father, loving husband, and a foundational pillar in the island’s wrestling and judo circles.
A dedicated longtime coach, builder, and board member with Wrestling PEI, Matt’s leadership guided countless young athletes. He coached three Canada Summer Games teams, each returning with multiple medals, and mentored several athletes to National Gold. His proudest accomplishment was coaching his daughter, Keely, to a U-17 National Gold in 2025 and a silver medal at the Canada Summer Games.
Matt’s knowledge, determination, and friendship were his legacy. His impact extended beyond wrestling into BJJ, judo, and MMA, where he was deeply involved. While his presence will be sorely missed, the values he instilled and the champions he built ensure his influence will endure for generations.

Our deepest condolences are with his wife, Melanie, their children, his athletes, and all who loved him. During this vulnerable time, we ask that his immediate family be granted privacy and space to heal, knowing our entire community supports them.
