Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice Mourns the Loss of Dr. Thomas L. Coleman

The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Thomas L. Coleman, a beloved colleague, trusted leader, and former member of the DJJ Board. A distinguished DeKalb County community leader, Dr. Coleman’s lifetime of service profoundly impacted our state.

A retired U.S. Air Force officer and Vietnam veteran, Dr. Coleman dedicated over 25 years to military service. He continued this legacy at DJJ for more than 12 years, serving as Chief Deputy Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner over Programs, Education, and Youth Development. His steady leadership and unwavering commitment to the youth in our care helped shape the agency’s mission.

Beyond DJJ, his public service extended to roles as Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and as a volunteer commissioner with the DeKalb County Housing Authority. A lifelong learner, he held degrees from Georgia State University, Central Michigan University, and Clark Atlanta University.

We are grateful for the powerful example Dr. Coleman set. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Beverly, his children, Donna and Jeff, and all who knew him. His legacy of integrity and service will continue to guide and inspire us.
